Botanical

2005 to 2013

Sculptures which distil and exaggerate botanical structures while exploring resonances with the female body and metaphors for the stages of a woman’s lifetime. Observation of seeds, fruits and pods layered with visual and intellectual sources ranging from Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights to Karl Blossfeldt’s early 20th Century botanical photography and the illustrations of 18th Century botanist Robert John Thornton in New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus von Linnaeus: Temple of Flora (engravings of plants set in theatrical landscapes accompanied by poetry, flower lore and legend).

(Most went to private collections).
